Adhkaar on Going to Bed
The following is a guide for what to
do and what Adhkaar to say on going to bed. The Adhkaar will be followed by
evidence validating them.
Recite Ayat Al-Kursi:
/allaahu laa
ilaaha illaa huwal-hayyul-qayyuum(u), laa ta’khuduhu sinatuw-wa-laa nawm(ul),
lahu maa-fis-samaawaati wa-maa-fil-arD(i), man
dal-ladee yashfa’u indahuu
illaa bi-idnih(i), ya’lamu
maa baina aideehim
wa-maa khalfahum, wa-laa
yuheeTuna bi-shai-im-min ilmihee
illaa bimaa shaa’(a),
wasi’a
kursiyyuhus-samaawaati
wal-arD(a), wa-laa ya-uuduhuhifZuhumaa, wa-huwal-aliyyul aZeem(u)/
Translation
(Allah! There is no God save Him,
the Alive, the Eternal. Neither slumber nor sleep overtaketh Him. Unto Him
belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. Who is
that intercedeth with Him save by His leave? He knoweth that which is in front
of them and that which is behind them, while they encompass nothing of His
knowledge save what He will. His throne includeth the heavens and the earth,
and He is never weary of preserving them. He is the Sublime, the Tremendous).
Recite The Last Verses of Surat
Al-Baqarah:
/aamanar-rasuulu bimaa
unzila ilaihi mir-rabbihi
wal-mu’minuun(a), kullun aamana
bil-laahi, wa-malaa-ikatihi, wa-kutubihi,
wa-rusulih(i), laa nufarriqu
baina ahadim-mir-rusulih(i), wa-qaaluu
sami’naa wa-aTa’naa, ghufraanaka
rabbanaa wa-ilaikal-maSeer/
/rabbanaa laa
tu-aakhidnaa in-naseenaa aw
akhTa’naa, rabbanaa wa-laa
tahmil alainaa iSran
kamaa hamaltahu alal-ladeena
min qablinaa, rabbanaa
wa-laa tuhammilnaa maa
laa Taaqata lanaa
bih(i), wa’fu annaa,
waghfir lanaa warhamnaa,
anta mawlaanaa fanSurnaa
alal-qaumil-kaafireen(a)/
Translation
(“(285) The Messenger beleiveth in
that which hath been revealed unto him from his Lord and (so do) the believers.
Each one beleiveth in Allah and His angels and His scriptures and His
messengers—We make no distinction between any of His messengers—and they say:
We hear, and we obey. (Grant us) Thy forgiveness, our Lord. Unto Thee is the
journeying.”)
“(286) Allah tasketh not a soul
beyond its scope. For it (is only) that which it hath earned, and against it
(only) that which it hath deserved. Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget, or
miss the mark! Our Lord! Lay not on us such a burden as Thou didst lay on those
before us! Our Lord! Impose not on us that which we have not the strength to
bear! Pardon us, absolve us and have mercy on us, Thou, our Protector, and give
us victory over the disbelieving ‘ofolk.”)
Recite Surat Alkafirun:
(1) Qul yaa ayyuhal-kaafiruun(a), (2) laa
a’budu maa ta’buduun(a),
(3) wa-laa antum aabiduuna
maa a’bud(u), (4) wa-laa
ana aabidum-maa abattum,
(5) wa-laa antum
aabiduuna maa a’bud(u),
(6) lakum deenukum wa-liya
deen(i)
Translation
(1) Say: O disbeleivers! (2) I worship not that which ye worship; (3) Nor worship ye that which I worship. (4) And I shall not worship that which ye
worship. (5) Nor will ye worship that
which I worship. (6) Unto you your
religion, and unto me my religion.”)
Do Nafth: (blowing slightly – without
spitting – into your palms put together) after reciting Surat Al-Ikhlaas, Surat
Al-Falaq, and Surat An-Nas. You should, then, rub your hands over the parts of
your body you can reach, starting with the head, face, and front of your body.
You can do the recitation and Nafth three times.
Say: /subhanallah (Glory be to Allah) 33times,
/alhamdu-lil-laah/ (Praise be to Allah) 33 times, and /allaahu akbar/ (Allah is the Greatest) 33 times.
Say: /allaahumma bismika
ahyaa wa-bismika amuut(u)
(O Allah! In Your name I live, and in Your name I die).
Say: /bismika rabbi
waD’atu jambi, wa-bika
arfa’uh, amsakta nafsee,
farhamhaa, wa-in arsaltahaa
fahfaZhaa bimaa tahfaZ(u)
bihee ibadakaS-Saaliheen/
Translation
(In Your name, O Lord, I lie down to
sleep. And by Your permission I wake up. If You do not return my soul [to my
body], have mercy on it, but if You return it [so I am still alive after
sleep], protect it as You do Your righteous slaves).
Say: /allaahumma aslamtu
nafsee ilaik(a), wa-fawwaDtu
amree ilaik(a), wa-wajjahtu
wajhee ilaik(a), wa-alja’tu
Zahree ilaik(a), raghbataw-wa-rahbatan ilaik(a),
laa malja’a wa-laa
manjam-minka illa ilaik(a),
aamantu bikitabikal-ladee anzalta,
wa-nabiyyikal-ladee arsalta/
Translation
(O Allah! I have surrendered my soul
to You, entrusted You with my affairs, turned my face towards You, and sought
Your protection of my back. All this is in pursuit of Your pleasure and out of fear
of You. There is no escape or refuge from You except in You. I believe in Your
Book, which You have sent down, and in Your Prophet, whom You have sent).
Evidence Validating Saying The Above Adhkaar
[1] Evidence for the recitation of
Ayat Al-Kursi comes from the Hadith narrated by Abu-Hurairah in connection with
the Ramadhan Zakah. According to the Hadith,
“….When you go to bed, recite Ayat Al-Kursi…”
[2] Concerning the last two verses
of Surat Al-Baqarah, the Prophet said, “If one recites the last two verses of
Surat Al-Baqarah at night, they will be sufficient [for that night’s portion of
remembrance].”
[3] Concerning Surat Al-Kafirun, the
Prophet said, “Recite Surat Al-Kafirun, then go straight to bed; it manifests
your dissociation from Shirk (polytheism).”
[4] Getting ready for sleep, the
Prophet lay in bed, did Nafth into his palms, recited Surat Al-Ikhlaas, Surat
Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas, then rubbed his body with his hands.
[5] The Prophet said to Ali and
Fatimah, “When you lie in bed, say: ‘Allah is the Greatest’33 times, ‘Praise be
to Allah’ 33 times; and ‘Exalted be Allah’ 33 times.
[6] Whenever the Prophet went to
bed, he said, “O Allah! In Your name I live, and in Your name I die.”
[7] The Prophet said, “When one of
you goes to bed, he should shake the bed sheets and covers, for he does not
know what (e.g. insects) might be in it. Then, he should say, ‘In Your name, O
Lord, I lie down to sleep. And by Your leave I wake up. If You do not return my
soul [to my body], have mercy on it, but if You return it [so I am still alive
after sleep], protect it as You do Your righteous slaves.’
[8]The Prophet said, “In preparation
for going to bed, you should do wuduu’ (wash for salah), lie on your right
side, then say, “O Allah! I have surrendered my soul to You, Entrusted You with
my affair, turned my face towards You, and sought Your protection of my back.
All this is in pursuit of Your pleasure and out of fear of You. There is no
escape or refuge from You except in You. I believe in Your Book, which You have
sent down, and in Your Prophet, whom You have sent.’ If you die (at this note),
you die in Fitrah [pure Islam].”
