What to Say to Console Someone on The Death of a Relative

To console someone on the death of a relative, one can say:    /inna  lil-laahi  maa  akhad(a),  wa-lahu  maa  a’Taa,  wa-kullu  shai-in  indahu  bi-ajalim-musammaa/

Translation

(To Allah belongs what He takes, and so does what he gives.For everything He has fixed a time limit).

The prophet said those words to console his daughter when she lost a son of hers, and told her to have patience and to pray for reward from Allah.

When a member of one’s family dies, one should say:    /innaa  lil-laahi  wa-innaa  ilaihi  raaji’uun,  allaahumma’-jurnee  fee  muSeebatee,  wa-akhlif  lee  khairam-minhaa/

Translation

(We all belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return. O Allah! Reward me for my affliction, and give something better instead).

According to the Hadith, if a Muslim who loses a relative by death says those prayers, Allah will give him something better instead.

Offering a funeral prayer for a dead person, the Prophet was heard supplicating:

/allaahumma-ghfir  lah(u),  wa-rhamh(u),  wa-aafihi,  wa-anh(u),  wa-wassi  mudkhalah(u),  wa-ghsilhu  bilmaa-I  wath-thalji  wal-barad(i),  wa-naqqihi  min-alkhaTaayaa  kamaa  naqqaitath-thawbal-abyaDa  minad-danas(i),  wa-abdilh(u)  daraan  khairam-min  ahlih(i),  wa-zawjan  khairam-min  zawjih(i),  wa-adkhilhul-janna(ta),  wa-a’idhu  min  adaabil-qabr(i),  wa-min  adaabin-naar/

Translation

(“O Allah! Forgive him; have mercy on him; heal him; pardon him; be generous to him; make his entrance comfortable; wash him with water, snow and hail, and purify him from sins as a white garment is washed clean of dirt; give him a home better than his home (on earth), a family better that his family, and a wife better than his wife; take him into the Heavens, and protect him from the trial of the grave and the torture of Hell Fire.”)

What to Say at The Last Moments

At the last moments of one’s life, one should be reminded to say:   /laa ilaaha  illal-laah/

Translation

(There is no god but Allah).

The Prophet said, “If the last words one [who is dying] utters are ‘There is no god but Allah’, he goes to heaven.” He also said, “Make your own folks that are dying repeat after you, ‘There is no god but Allah’.” In this respect, you should do that as gently as possible in order that the dying person does not become so annoyed that he may reject to declare the Shahada – may Allah forbid. It is recommended that if the dying person utters the Shahada once, you do not need to repeat it unless he says something else.
