What to Say on Starting Swalah

The following are some prayers from Sahih (sound) Hadiths. They are selected particularly for being easily memorized. One can say these prayers once he enters the Salah state, i.e. after the first Takbeer (Saying:  /allaahu  akbar/).   May Allah enable us to say them regulary.

[A] You can say:

/wajjahtu  wajhiya  lil-ladee  faTaras-samaawaati  wal-arDa  haneefa(w),  wa-maa  ana  minal-mushrikeen(a)  /inna  Salaatee  wa-nusukee,  wa-mahyaaya  wa-mamaatee,  lil-laahi  rabbil-aalameen(a),  laa  shareeka  lah(u),  wa-bidaalika  umert(u),  wa-ana  minal-muslimeen/

Translation

(“I have turned my face toward him who created the heavens and the earth, as one by nature upright, and I am not of the idolaters.” “My worship and, my sacrifice and my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the Worlds. He hath no partner. This am I commanded, and I am first of those who surrender (unto Him).”

[B] You can say:

 /subhaanakal-laahumma  wa-bihamdik(a),  wa-tabaaraka-smuk(a),  wa-ta’aala  jadduk(a),  wa-laa  ilaaha  ghairuk/

Translation

(O Allah! Glory and praise be to You. Blessed be Your name, and Supreme be Your Fortune. There is no god but You.)

[C] You can add:

/allaahumma  baa’id  bainee  wa-baina  khaTaayaay(a),  kamaa  baa’atta  bainal-mashriqi  wal-maghrib/  allaahumma  naqqini  minal-khaTaayaa   kamaa  yunaqqa-aththauwbul-abyaDu  minad-danas(i)  /allaahumma-ghsil  khaTaayaay(a)  bil-maa-i  wath-ththalji  wal-barad/

Translation

(O Allah! Distance me from my sins, as you have distanced the east from the west, and wash away my sins with cool water, ice and hail, as a white garment is cleansed of all dirt.)

[D] You can also add:

/allaahumma  rabba  jibraa-eel(a)  wa-meekaa-eel(a)  wa-israfeel(a),  faaTiras-samaawaati  wal-arD(i),  aalimal-ghaibi  wash-shahaada(ti),  anta  tahkumu  baina  ibaadika  feema  kaanuu  feehi  yakhtalifuun(a),  ihdinee  lima-khtulifa  feehi  minal-haqqi  bi-idnik(a),  innaka  tahdee  man  tashaa-u  ilaa  SiraaTim-mustaqeem/

Translation

(O Allah! Lord of Gabriel, Mikhail and Israfil, Creator of the heavens and the earth, knower of the Unseen and the Seen. You will judge between Your slaves concerning matters wherein they differ. Guide me to the truth in those matters wherein they differ by Your permission, for You guide whom You will to the straight path.)

 

[E] Seeking Refuge in Allah From Satan, You Can Say The Well-Known Prayer:

 /a’uudu  bil-laahi  minash-shaiTaanir-rajeem/

Translation

(I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the outcast.)

You Can Also Say:

/a’uudu  bil-laahis-samee’il-aleem(i),  minash-shaiTaanir-rajeem(i),  min  sharri  hamzih(i)  wa-nafkhih(i)  wa-nafthih/

Translation

(I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, All-knowing, from Satan, the outcast, and from his whispers, his blowing and his Nafth.)

What to Say After The Call For Salah

Once the call for Salah is over, one should say:  /ash-hadu  allaa  ilaaha  illal-laah(u),  wahdahu  laa  shareeka  lah(u),  wa-anna  muhammadan  abduhu  wa-rasuuluh(u),    allaahumma  Salli  wa-sallim  alaa  abdika  wa-rasuulika  Muhammad/  raDeetu  bil-laahi  rabba(w),  wa-bil-islami  deenaa/

Translation

(I testify that there is no god but Allah, alone without partners, and Muhammad (pbuh) is His slave and Messenger. O Allah! Let Your prayers and peace be upon Your slave and Messenger, Muhammad (pbuh). I am pleased to accept Allah as my Lord, Muhammad (pbuh) as His Messenger, and Islam as my religion).

He should add:

/allaahumma  rabba  haadihid-da’watit-taamma(ti),  waS-Salaatil-qaa-ima(ti),  aati  muhammadan  al-waseelata  wal-faDeela(ta),  wab-athhu  maqaamam  mahmuudan-il-ladee  wa’adtah/

Translation

(O Allah! Lord of this perfect call and the established prayer! Grant Muhammad (pbuh) the privilege of intercession (on the Day of Judgment) and superiority, and take him to the exalted place You have promised him).

Then, one can supplicate Allah for whatever one seeks for the good of this world and the hereafter.

The Prophet said, “When you hear the prayer caller, repeat after him what he says, then pray for me.” He also said, “If, on hearing the call for prayer, one says, ‘I testify that there is no god but Allah, alone without partners, and Muhammad (pbuh) is His slave and Messenger. O Allah! Let Your prayers and peace be upon Your slave and Messenger, Muhammad (pbuh). I am pleased to accept Allah as my Lord, Muhammad (pbuh) as His Messenger, and Islam as my religion,’ his sins will be forgiven.”

According to the Hadith, “If, on hearing the call for prayer, one says, ‘O Allah! Lord of this perfect call and the established prayer! Grant Muhammad (pbuh) the privilege of intercession (on the Day of Judgment) and superiority, and take him to the exalted place You have promised him,’ one will be eligible for my intercession on the Resurrection Day.”

The Prophet also said, “No supplication is rejected between the call for prayer and the start of prayer.”

What to Say as You Hear The Call For Prayer

As soon as the call for prayer starts, one should follow the caller, repeating what is being said, except at :

 /hayyi  alas-Salaah/  (Hasten for prayer) and /hayyi  alal-falaah/  (Hasten for success),  one should say:

/laa-hawla  wa-laa  quwwata  illaa  bil-laah/  (There is neither might nor power except with Allah).

The Prophet said, “When you hear the call for prayer, repeat after the caller.”

What to Say While in The Mosque

While in the mosque, the Muslim should be remembering Allah, praying or reading the Qur’an. Regarding the function of mosques, Allah says [in Surat An-Nur, Ayahs 36-37] they are”(36)…houses which Allah hath allowed to be exalted and that His name shall be remembered therein. Therein do offer praise to Him at morning and evening (37) Men whom neither merchandise nor sale beguileth from remembrance of Allah and constancy in prayer and paying to the poor their due; who fear a day when hearts and eyeballs will be overturned.”

Also, the Prophet said, “Mosques are built for a purpose.” “They are for the remembrance of Allah, Lord of Might and Majesty, for prayers and for reading the Holy Qur’an.”
